Itahari is a town and municipality in Sunsari District in the Koshi Zone of South-Eastern part of Nepal. It is the largest city in Sunsari District. Itahari is also Sub-Metropolitan city in Sunsari District. Itahari is densely populated city in Eastern Nepal. At the time of the 2011 Nepal census had population around 1,40,517. It is the center of the east-west Mahendra Highway and north-south Koshi Highway and thus is a town of emerging importance.



Itahari is located in Terai region of Eastern Nepal. Itahari is also known as " The main transportation junction of Eastern Nepal". Nearest city from Itahari is Dharan, distance from Itahari to Dharan is 15.7 Km via Koshi highway. We can reach Ilam from Itahari, which distance is about 159.9 km east via Mechi Highway. Another nearest city from Itahari is Biratnagar, which distance is about 24.6 km. So that's why Itahari is main center point of Eastern Nepal.


Mechi Kali Pokhari is located in the Itahari. Peoples are comes for boat rides and to have some good times with their families and relatives. People also comes to visit the temple that is located in middle of the lake.




Taal talaiya is one of the famous tourist attraction in Itahari. It is located at distance about 700m east from from Itahari Chowk. You can also visit the zoo located nearby or spend some family time at the Fun Park inside the premises. However, these areas can get crowded on Saturdays.

Buddhi Jamuna Ghat is a religious place in Itahari.It used to be a cremation site. it is a dumping site  due to local concern about cleanliness about this place, it become a holy sight for religious tourist. it’s become an area of cultural significance with a lot of tourists visiting it.




Itahari is one of the three municipalities of Sunsari District. Itahari is near from dense forest, popularly known as "Char Koshe Jhadi"on North, which provides shelter for different birds and different animals such as elephant, tiger, leopard, wild pork, deer, monkeys, foxes.

Itahari is one of the business center of Eastern Nepal. Due to the increasing facilities such as hospital, police station, many people are migrating from different place to Itahari. Different business mall are opening nowdays. More importantly, many people are coming from different places for jobs. Itahari has got all facilities that every person need. All banks branches of Nepal are available here. Life style in Itahari is increasing day by day.

Itahari is center point of Eastern Nepal, many people comes form different places to reach places like Dharan, Ilam, Bhedetar. So that's why local people's are focusing in tourism. Nowadays, lots of hotels, lodges, restaurant are opening day by day which really helps in income of local people. Nowadays, tourism is the main income of local people's of Itahari.
